“Berate” 질책하다.

질책(叱責)은 꾸짖어 나무라는 것을 말한다. 질책에 관한 영어 표현이 여럿 있는데, “Berate”은 그중에서도 격식적인 표현으로 쓰이는 단어이다.

2. (Formal) To yell at (someone), to criticise (someone) in a loud and angry way.

• “Posting the pictures of shoplifters does nothing except turn that individual into a target for the rest of society to ridicule and berate.” (그들의 사진을 게시하는 건, 그 개인을 비웃고, 호되게 꾸짖기 위해 그 사람을 사회의 나머지 구성원들의 비난의 대상이 되게 하는 것 외에는 아무런 의미가 없다.)
• “Don’t berate yourself for failing; congratulate yourself for trying and move forward.” (실패에 대해서 자신을 꾸짖지 마세요. 시도하고 움직였다는 것으로 자신을 축하하세요.)
• “I don’t need you to berate me.” (나는 내게 질책하는 너가 필요 없다.)
